Choosing a thoroughbred puppy: an overview of kennels

Adopting a puppy in a family is always a responsible decision, and choosing a thoroughbred pet is especially difficult. When buying a puppy from your hands, without documents, you will have to independently assess the compliance of the appearance and nature of the animal with the breed standards. Without cynological experience, this is unlikely to succeed.

If you decide to start a purebred dog with a pedigree, it is best to contact an official kennel or a registered breeder with a good reputation. The pedigree of a puppy influences not only the opportunity to participate in exhibitions, it is also associated with certain guarantees of the health and behavioral characteristics of your future pet. Competent breeders in the course of breeding work try to minimize the likelihood of hereditary diseases to which dogs of this breed are predisposed.

Since 1991, the level of professionalism of dog kennels and breeders in our country has been evaluated by the Russian Cynological Federation (RKF).

In turn, the RKF operates under the supervision of the International Cynological Federation (Fédération Cynologique Internationale). Thanks to participation in the FCI, our dogs have the right to participate in international exhibitions, which are also held in the territory of the Russian Federation. The animals that our compatriots exhibit regularly win champion titles, and the breeding work of Russian specialists is highly appreciated all over the world.

Since joining the FCI, the vocabulary of domestic dog breeders has included the concepts of kennel, which translates from English as "dog kennel", and breeder - "animal breeder". Both those and others are engaged in breeding dogs, however in the RKF system different requirements are imposed on them. A kennel is an organization that deals with the selection, breeding and rearing of purebred dogs. This definition includes both individual nurseries located on a certain territory, and clubs that unite several professional breeders.

Membership in the Kennel Federation imposes a number of requirements for dog kennels:

A good kennel values ​​its reputation, brand and is responsible for the bred puppies. The breeding manager carefully selects future parents - usually from dogs born in the kennel. In this case, animals can belong both directly to the owner of the organization, and to other owners.

Each puppy, as soon as it is born, is carefully examined, receives a brand and its first documents. If a dog does not meet international breed standards, then it will not participate in breeding in the future.

Breeding of thoroughbred animals can be carried out not only by specialized nurseries, but also by private individuals - breeders (breeders). Each owner who has at least one female older than 15 months can contact the RKF and register his own factory prefix.

The breeder, unlike the owner of the kennel, does not need to have a specialized education and experience in dog breeding. The Kennel Federation attaches him to a certain club, which advises on breeding issues, conducts actuation and branding of babies, writes out puppy metrics. The breeder does not pay contributions to the RKF and can breed dogs right at home.
